Until the 1930’s, Sea Point was a little seaside resort on the outskirts of the city, where many well-to-do Capetonians had their holiday and weekend homes. Since the 1950’s, this suburb has seen a surge in the number of high-rise apartment blocks and commercial buildings going up.

Today Sea Point has a different face. ‘Upper Sea Point’ on the slopes of Signal Hill is characterised by huge private properties and estates, while next to the promenade there are rows upon rows of luxury apartments and holiday accommodation. In between these areas is the Main Road, where The South African School of English is situated, along with a variety of pubs, music clubs, coffee shops and restaurants and bistros.

Sea Point promenade, which stretches to Mouille Point, is also very popular. It has come to be known as jogger's mile and locals and tourists alike meet here for a walk and a talk or simply to sit and watch the world go by. Although the beaches in Sea Point are not ideal for swimming, the powerful surf and rocky coast draw surfers from around the peninsula. There is however, the Pavilion swimming pool at the end of the promenade and it is also an old landmark of the city.

Neighbouring Sea Point is Green Point, not only famous for its clubbing strip but also home to the 2010 World Cup Stadium. The stadium is a massive engineering feat and took 2 years and 9 months to complete. It was officially handed over to the city of Cape Town in a grand ceremony on 14 December 2009 and now stands ready to welcome the world!
