Being an English Language School which is fully aware of its social responsibility, we help the community through donation, charity and sponsorship and our students are welcome to participate by volunteering or signing up for an internship. Conscious of our responsibility as Africans and South Africans and further aware of the fact that language tourism should also benefit the wider community, we at the South African School of English are proud to be involved with direct social upliftment in underprivileged areas. Under The Rainbow was started, and is driven by one of the directors of the school. In his own words "I come from one of these areas myself and it is where I have my roots. I know the sadness of not having and I know the joy of receiving a helping hand. I’m happy to allow students at our school an opportunity to experience the joys of mixing with those of my community as well as the happiness derived from doing something worthwhile which brings a smile to the face of another human being." We are currently involved with Mokone Primary in Langa and Hillside Primary in Lavistown. On numerous occasions we have been able to hand over donations in the form of cash, computers, overhead projectors, writing and learning materials, old clothes collected from students, and various other items. In addition, we are also involved with the planting of vegetable gardens and the development of sports fields at these schools. One of our previous students volunteered their time to teaching brass instrument music in the townships, which was a fantastic treat to all who were involved. The South African School of English are also proud partners in the Children’s World Day-Care Centre in Mandalay, which was officially opened on 12 December 2008. |
