Kickstart, one of our partners, is offering a new, part-time volunteer opportunity designed specifically for language school students.  The program gives students the chance to participate in a Sports Development Program in the Makhaza neighborhood in the township of Khayelitsha.

We are offering volunteers the opportunity to participate in a Sports Development Program in the Makhaza neighborhood in the township of Khayelitsha.

This is a unique experience for open-minded, international volunteers to learn more about South African culture, issues and local people while playing sports!

The first cycle will take place on the 14^th of November 2009 with an introduction/orientation meeting in Nyanga.

We will pick up all of our volunteers at PicknPay in Sea Point at 10h00am with a van and will then drive them to our orientation location at a well known restaurant in the township of Nyanga.

During this orientation, a representative from the Safety Department of Khayelitsha will give a short speech and brief the volunteers on how to act and be safe in the neighbourhood.
A previous French volunteer, Thomas (who is also part of the organization team for this new part-time volunteer program), will give a presentation on his experience as a volunteer in the townships and how it has affected his life.

To ensure a safe stay in Nyanga and Khayelitsha, we have hired a well respected local for our program, Vuzi. He will accompany our volunteers in the van and will stay at the volunteer site during the program.
Vuzi grew up in Khayelitsha and has committed his life to helping these township kids see their potential, showing them that they have a bright future and teaching them that there are other ways of life than crime and alcohol/drug abuse. In addition to our program,  he also runs various other community projects.
He will speak about township life and will take our volunteers on a walk through the neighbourhood to meet and interact with the locals.

After the walk, we have organized a Xhosa braai where we will teach the volunteers some basic Xhosa words. During this braai, the volunteers will have the opportunity to talk with other township residents/kids, ask any questions they might have and share their different cultures.

Drop off time in Sea Point will be approximately 15-16h00pm.

The actual Sports Program starts on Tuesday, 17th November.
The project runs twice a week (every Tues and Thurs) for 4 weeks.

Pick-up time in Sea Point : 13h15pm
Drop-off time in Sea Point : approximately 17h30pm

What to bring : Sports clothes and shoes, water, sun cream and lots of energy !

Kickstart will provide sports equipment such as soccer balls, basketballs, vests, etc.
The sports project will be held at the community centre in Khayelitsha, which has indoor and outdoor facilities. We expect the kids who attend this program to be between the ages of 8 and 14 years old.
The more volunteers we have, the more children we will attract to our Sports Development Program thereby making it a great success !

We offer soccer, basketball or netball. No teaching experience is required nor does the volunteer need to be particularly good at any of these sports.

We believe it will be an enriching time for everyone and both the volunteer and the kids will gain real insight into each other’s cultures and ways of living...

We hope that this experience will stay in our volunteers’ minds long after they have left South Africa.

Costs : 2699pp for 4 weeks all inclusive (orientation, transport, safety guide)

Volunteers will get a R200 discount if they book before the 6th of November !
