Today 11 February 2010 is the 20th anniversary of the day our hero and father of the nation Mr. Nelson Mandela was released from Victor Verster (nowadays called Drakenstein Correctional Services Centre and about 70km to the north of our language school) prison in Paarl after having been imprisoned for 27 years in jails around the country including Robben Island. All living South Africans irrespective of colour or creed including myself will clearly remember where we were at that moment in time. I also clearly remember the scenes of jubilation and celebration when this great man first set foot outside of the prison gates and greeted us with the struggle greeting of “Amandla!” (which means “Power!”) and the crowd answered with “Awethu” (which means “to the people”). It is a moment which will be forever burnt in the collective memory of those who witnessed it and it is something which I will be proud to tell my children and grand children about. It was this moment and the events that followed afterwards which finally gave us as non white South Africans our pride and dignity back. It was that moment that I realized that no longer will be chased out of restaurants and shops and that finally we will be able to enjoy the same rights and privileges which the other half of our citizenry took for granted for so long. It was then and still is now a moment of overwhelming emotion and it is the celebration of these events which students at our English Language School in Cape Town were told about and which they will be allowed to attend today. Mr. Mandela, although no longer seen in the public eye, will be attending the opening of the South African parliament in Cape Town and for those lucky students at our language school it is an opportunity to finally try to get a picture of this man who is regarded as a giant amongst men.

Mr. Mandela is honored in our school every day – we have his picture hanging of the walls of our language school. We would like to take this opportunity to once again say to him “THANK YOU TATA, you have suffered for us and through your suffering we have our humanity back and because of you we are able to have this language school in Cape Town. May your twilight years be filled with pure joy and good health – Aluta Continua”

Until the next time, peace, love and harmony.
